Since biological warfare has negative connotations for most people, it is unrealistic to attempt to create support for biological warfare, even under the guise of "educating the public" (as recommended by Joshua Lederberg). However, this article makes the components of biological warfare appear benign by presenting them in the context of avoiding back-contamination of the earth by living matter outside the earth, or contamination of the moon or planets by earth forms. This is very reasonable and persuasive but unfortunately it is not what biological warfare is really about. Certainly, if Joshua Lederberg were introduced in this article as someone who was under contractual obligation to Fort Detrick, the center of biological warfare for the United States, the article might be less persuasive.
